Have you ever considered making your own shampoo? If so, here is a super Simple Natural Shampoo recipe that will benefit your hair and your budget.

With my mom being a cosmetologist growing up I always was into different hair products. We always got to go along with her to the salon store that only cosmetologists could go to and pick out our own things. This was always super exciting and we would have certain hair products we would use all the time each had its own purpose. Now that I am older and a mom I gravitate more for simplicity. I used to have a shampoo, conditioner, hair mask, a treatment, etc. all just for in the shower. Not to mention my enormous collection of detanglers, hair spray, gels, etc. that I would keep in my cabinet. Now my Shower setup is simple, face wash, bar soap, and my shampoo.
Why Switch To Natural Shampoo
On my Journey of reducing chemicals in my home, I decided to take a look at my hair care products. This was one thing that I never really thought of as being toxic to me, however when I ended up looking closely at what ingredients were in them I felt that I should have looked sooner.
Most shampoos have Sulfates (that can cause skin irritation, inflammation, and increased sensitivity), Parabens (affect hormones, risk of breast cancer and skin irritation), Phthalates ( affect hormones, fertility, liver, thyroid, etc.) and so much more. It seems in today’s day it is harder to find things we use daily that help us more than harm us. This is why I decided to start making my own.

Using Natural ingredients like Castile soap and essential oils cuts down on all the crud. Not only is this way better for my hair and skin but ends up being better on my wallet as well. Let me break it down for you. Castile Soap is traditionally made with olive oil or other vegetable-based oils and has no synthetic ingredients. Unlike other soaps, castile soap doesn’t strip away natural oils from your skin which helps reduce irritation. You can also add in other things that will help with drier hair like argan or jojoba oil. Then pair this with essential oils that help with whatever your hair will need.
How it Worked for Me
Now I am a very simple person when it comes to taking on extra. I like things that are easy to remember and quick to put together. That is why this recipe is one of my favorites! It only has a few ingredients and you can customize it to what you need.
I personally have pretty good hair, I have never really had any issues with it so making the switch didn’t really change up too much for me. When it came to my husband, however, he had a super dry scalp which also led to dandruff. He used a dandruff shampoo all of the time with minimal results. I convinced him to try a simple natural shampoo that I made and I was surprised by the results. He went from obvious flakes every day to almost nothing. He still will get some flakes during the winter due to the dry air, however, it is a night and day difference. The only thing I switched from his to mine was the essential oils.

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup Castile Soap
- 1/2 Cup Water
- 1 tsp Argan Oil
- 7 drops Rosemary Oil Essential Oil
- 15 drops tea tree Oil Essential Oil
- 10 drops Lemon Grass Essential Oil
That is it. Just a few ingredients to make your own simple natural shampoo!
Directions
- Measure out the 1/2 cup castile soap and water and add them to the foaming soap dispenser.
- Next, you will add your 1 tsp of argan oil (you can also use jojoba oil if you have that on hand.)
- Add in your essential Oils.
Please see the different essential oil blends listed below. The Sensitive skin or dry scalp would be listed above.
Citrus
- 15 drops Orange
- 10 drops Lime
- 5 drops Grapefruit
Floral
- 15 drops Lavender
- 10 drops Ylang Ylang
- 10 drops Orange
Kids
- 15 drops Lavender
- 15 drops Clementine (or orange)
- 10 drops Chamomile
Keep in mind that it will take a little while for your hair to transition from using a store-bought shampoo to your own. I know mine took 4-6 weeks to fully transition, but after that, my hair has been amazing. I also wanted to note that I do not need to use conditioner with this shampoo. Once in awhile, I will do a conditioning hair mask, but I usually only need to do that in the winter months.
