10 Things to Live More Simply

June 23, 2023 by Carlie Leave a Comment

Life can be hectic and chaotic at times so to have the urge to live more simply feels like a way to lead a more stress-free life. Here are 10 things you can do to help you live a more simple life.

10 things to live more simply

1. Drink More Water

I know that this one seems a little weird to live more simply, however, this can be a huge game changer with how you feel. Living more simply means that you are doing things that relax and ease your mind. Drinking more water can do that. It can make you feel more refreshed and uplifted, not to mention the health benefits of drinking enough water throughout the day. You can go overboard though so the rule I like to go by is drinking half my body weight in ounces. So for easy math, if you weigh 100lbs you would drink 50oz. I put drinking water first because it is the easiest switch with a pretty big impact.

2. Intentional Socials

This one can be hard in this day and age but getting intentional with your social media can make a big difference. This can be done in a few different ways. The more obvious one is not scrolling randomly just because you don’t know what else to do. This can have a big mental and even physical impact. I know for me I start to feel nauseous and get a massive headache. That is my body’s way of saying this is not good for you.

The next way you can be more intentional is by making sure you are filtering out what you are seeing. Maybe you have a very negative friend always on your feed that just puts you in a bad mood. You can mute their posts without unfriending them. This way you don’t see the things making you feel a certain way and they never know. Also, when is the last time you even went through your friends or the people you follow? Follow people that make you happy or give you good ideas. Things that will improve your life not hinder it.

3. Nature

Nature is simply beautiful. It can purify your mind, body, and soul when you take the time to enjoy it. Nature and living more simply really do go hand in hand. Most of the time when you hear simple life they are talking about people immersed in nature. Gardening, farming, overall homesteading. Not saying that those things are simple as they do have their challenges as well however, getting closer to nature can make your life feel more simple and relaxed.

3. Simplify your Pantry

Taking a good look at your pantry to make it more simple can help you when you are meal planning. If you are looking into your pantry and there are just endless options every night for supper, well that can be very overwhelming. If you simplify your pantry and keep mostly ingredients or food that you can make a multitude of different meals out of, it can be less overwhelming. I like to keep all of my ingredients labeled in mason jars. This way it is more appealing to the eyes, yet I can see what I have and how much I have left. So when I look into the pantry I am seeing different types of flour, sweeteners, seeds, and nuts first. I have things such as granola bars, fruit leathers, and chips in containers you cannot see through. This way I am also more likely to grab the healthier options than reaching for convenience. It not only looks more simple but helps me and my family choose healthier options.

4. Make your Cleaning Supplies

Before I started making my own cleaning supplies I had a different cleaner for everything. One for glass, bathroom, kitchen, etc. I never realized how many I really had as I thought that was normal having the cupboard under the sink full of different cleaners. Now that I make my own, the cupboard under the sink has now become extra storage. I have mainly one All-Purpose Cleaner that I use and it does the job for everything! Obviously, it will be a little different for things such as the dishes or laundry however, the All-purpose cleaner works well with the majority of what I am wiping up. With less to choose from also simplifies cleaning. You don’t have to worry about what cleaner to use for what. You just grab and go!

5. Morning & Evening Rituals

This is one of the best things I have done not just for me but for my whole family. We more recently got out of our evening rituals due to summer activities such as camping and man does it show. When our family has a morning and evening ritual it makes life seem a little more simple. When having these rituals in place everyone tends to go on autopilot mode. They go through the motions without even thinking about them and everything works as a well-oiled machine. Now I am going to put a disclaimer that this doesn’t always mean things will go smoothly, but it helps simplify your day.

6. Simplify your Expenses

Making expenses a little more simplified can really relieve your stress. There are so many different ways you can make changes to your expenses to simplify them. You can pay cash, use only one credit card, create a budget, consolidate accounts, get rid of unused subscriptions, etc. The list is really endless. Any little change can make a huge difference and if you do a few just imagine the relief you feel. Maybe it won’t be so overwhelming to go over your expenses once simplified.

7. Staycation

This is a great one to come after simplifying your expenses. Take a staycation! For those that don’t know a staycation is when you vacation at home. You can make sure to plan things that are going to relax you but not cost you any extra money. A lot of times we don’t just sit at home and relax. We make all of these amazing rooms or spots in our home that would be a great place to relax and enjoy, but the amount we use them is usually minimal. Take a staycation and get to enjoy the things about your home that you don’t get to that often. You can even plan different things that you enjoy but never have time to do like maybe working on a DIY. Staying home can really heal your soul as much or more than a vacation can. Personally, a staycation is what I prefer. No packing, traveling, or having to deal with screaming kids that aren’t getting the proper sleep. That may be a me thing though.

9. Learn to Garden

Gardening is really good for so many things. It can provide physical activity with exposure to nature which is good for your health and soul. Not only do you get the act of gardening but you also get to enjoy the fruits of your labor quite literally. I love to get my kids involved so they get to learn what you put in your get-out. Showing them that the work you do every day really does matter and they absolutely love it!

10. Bliss Time

This is extremely important to live more simply. You put in hard work all of the time, make sure you are taking the time to enjoy it. One of my favorite things is grabbing a drink and just looking around at my latest project. Whether that be a painting I recently did, the flowers I just planted, or a bench I just brought back to life. We put in so much work every day that we really should take time to enjoy it. This doesn’t have to be just by yourself I love to have my whole family there. My family brings so much joy to my life and I find sitting and just getting to enjoy their company is a really simple thing to do, with no stress.

At the end of the day, I believe we are trying to live more simply to be less stressed and enjoy life more. Find the little things in your every day to make that happen. Whether it is a small or big change it can make a difference. When you are enjoying life you will definitely feel as though you are living more simply. Even if it is more simply in the moment.
